The Bill Neale Automotive Fine Art Award honors the world-renowned talent and legacy of automotive artistic icon Bill Neale. Neale, a long-time friend to TAWA, passed away in January of 2021 at the age of 95.

Portions of TAWA Member Scott Black’s previously published retrospective of Bill Neale appearing in AutoArtReview.com are edited and used with his permission.

A founding member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society and long-time former board member, Bill Neale was as much a treasure as the masterful paintings that are the centerpieces of collections worldwide.

Over the years, Neale earned awards and accolades at shows such as Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and John Barnes’ Cavallino Classic. More importantly, he earned friendships with everyone who met him.

The key to Bill’s work was always his ability to paint a subject in the medium which best captures its spirit.  Most artists typically paint in only one medium, but Bill was equally skilled with watercolor, acrylic and oil paint throughout his career.

Bill was often recognized for his close friendship with legends like Carroll Shelby, Dan Gurney and Jim Hall.

His brilliant illustrations of those legends and their automotive creations were among his most popular pieces. His credits cover a wide range of automobile events which include Cavallino, Road & Track, Automobile Magazine, Car & Driver, Sports Illustrated and others.

But he was best known for his beautiful private commissions of cars ranging from old Ferraris to the newest models out of Munich, Detroit and Tokyo. Those commissions include posters for Automobile Concours d' Elegance and events such as the Monterey Historic Races, The San Diego Concours, Houston Classi-Chassis, Jim Hall Chaparral Museum and Carroll Shelby Nationals. He served as a poster artist for the Colorado Grand Rally, and was even named the first ever Grand Marshal for the event.  Neale’s work won numerous accolades in the U.S., Europe and South America including the prestigious Peter Helck and Athena awards.

JUDGING AND ENTRIES

All entries must be published works. Up to 2 entries may be submitted. Judge may select high-quality entries that didn’t place for Special Recognition awards.

Late entries and those without completed entry forms will not be judged.

TAWA is honored to have Bill Neale's daughter Leslie Neale judge the awards in its inaugural year.

Entries will be judged on four criteria. The scale is 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest score in each category. The maximum score is 40.

Select the ENTRY FORM box to access the entry form. The ENTRY FORM must be submitted with each entry, and be filled out completely.  Space at the bottom of the form may be used for notes/entry explanations to the judge. Note should be no longer than 100 words.

Entries require the specific URL address in which the entry appears. This must be a permanent link to the page, without the need to register, join or pay to view the entry. Articles that are behind a paywall or require special access will be accepted if judges are provided login credentials. If articles other than the entry appear at the same web address, a note must be included on the entry form that clearly directs the judge to the entry. Please test the link before submitting the entry.

The entry must show the artist credit, publication date and name of publication.

In special cases, such as when providing a permanent link is not possible or an entry will be purged from a website before judging, a screenshot of the entry in original, in complete published form is acceptable.
