2017

Significant changes have been made to entry rules, categories and preparation, so PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

ENTRY RULES

Recognition and encouragement of excellence in automotive journalism are the goals of the Texas Auto Writers Association’s annual Excellence in Craft Competition.

Eligible entries for the 2017 competition include automotive-related content that has been published or has an on-air date between Sept. 1, 2016 and Aug. 31, 2017.  All entries, except for those in the Spanish Writing category, must be in English.

Winning entries will be announced Thursday, Sept. 28, at the State Fair of Texas Auto Show Media Day luncheon.

The competition is open to all TAWA members in good standing. An eligibility exception applies to the two new-for-2017 national Texas Truck Invitational Writing categories, in which non-TAWA members are invited to participate. The 2017 category list also includes the addition of a Public Relations/Marketing category for TAWA Manufacturer members.

TEXAS TRUCK INVITATIONAL

This competition invites TAWA members, along with non-members across the nation, to enter their works in exclusive truck-writing categories. A range of truck-related writing topics are eligible for entry, which cover light- and medium-duty passenger and commercial trucks/pickups – Classes 1-6 (up to 26,000 pounds GVWR) -- vans, chassis cabs, SUVs and CUVs.

The experimental nature of the competition during its first year calls for a basic approach, steering the focus solely to writing excellence. Articles on the aforementioned topics are judged in general Newspaper and Magazine categories.

Importantly, along with traditional first-, second- and third-place awards, an overall award winner will be chosen from first-place winners of Newspaper and Magazine categories. This year, the top awardee will receive a Katzkin leather interior, valued at $2,000.

PUBLIC RELATIONS/MARKETING

Informative, accurate and easy-to-navigate press kits are critical tools for automotive journalists. TAWA invites Manufacturer members (Associate member entries also welcomed) to enter work in the EICC that best reflects these user-friendly qualities. Entries are limited to three per the organization/corporation the Manufacturer member represents. The total entry number for the category will be cut off of at 25 entries. Exceptions to these numbers may be allowed with the EICC Chairman’s approval.

“GRAY-AREA” PUBLICATIONS

(Web articles, newsletters, blog posts, etc.)

Works from publications that are not specifically categorized as a newspaper or magazine, such as a web article, newsletter or blog post, may be entered in the best-matching category. Make a note on the entry form explaining the nature of the publication.

CATEGORIES

1.  WRITING

Writing categories are judged solely on writing excellence, and associated photography and graphics are not part of the judging criteria.
A.  Newspaper
B.  Magazine
C.  Spanish-- Newspaper/Magazine (both publication types are judged in a single category)

TEXAS TRUCK INVITATIONAL – Truck-related articles only

          A. Newspaper

          B. Magazine

2.  RADIO

A.  Radio show presentation

3.  PHOTOGRAPHY

A.  Photo – single published photo -- newspaper, magazine, web

4.  WEB DESIGN

A. Page layout/design/web article – judged on the creative and informative interaction of any combination of graphics, photos, articles (writing evaluated), videos, etc. (Note: judging will closely mirror that of the former “Internet” category.)

5.  PUBLIC RELATIONS/MARKETING

A.  Press Kit

(NOTE: there is a limit of three entries per the Manufacturer member’s organization/corporation, and the total entry number will be cut off at 25 entries. Exceptions to these numbers may be allowed with the EICC Chairman’s approval.)

All entries must be published works. Up to six entries may be submitted in a single category, except for Public Relations/Marketing, which is limited to three entries. Entrants can submit their works in as many categories as they like. The same piece of work cannot be entered in separate categories, with the exception of a truck-related article, which can be entered in both TAWA-members-only and Texas Truck Invitational categories.

Entrants will compete for first-, second- and third-place awards. An overall award winner will be chosen among the first-place Texas Truck Invitational category winners. In cases where more than one person (i.e. co-written article, radio show discussion, team page design effort) contributes to a winning entry, only one award will be presented.

Winning entries must meet a quality level determined by the judges on a point system. Rejected entries could lead to fewer than three awards in a category.  TAWA members entering duplicate truck-related articles in both the TAWA members-only and Texas Truck Invitational categories are eligible to win an award in both categories.

Entries will not be returned. Late entries and those without entry fees or completed entry forms will not be judged. Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than Aug. 31 to be accepted.

    JUDGING

All judges are accomplished professionals in their fields. Judges for the Texas Truck Invitational are noted writers and editors with decades of experience, who work or have worked for major national automotive publications.

    NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE ENTRIES

Entries require the specific URL address in which the entry appears. This must be a permanent link to the page, without the need to register, join or pay to view the entry. Articles that are behind a paywall or require special access will be accepted if judges are provided login credentials.  If articles other than the entry appear at the same web address, a note must be included on, or attached to, the entry form that clearly directs the judge to the entry. Please test the link before submitting the entry.

The entry must show the author’s byline, publication date and name of publication.

In special cases, such as when providing a permanent link is not possible or an entry will be purged from a website before judging, a screenshot of the entry in original, complete published form can be emailed. The screen grab must be a readable 100-percent-magnification example of the original article. Multiple pages may be submitted as necessary or a high-resolution single copy of the full original article is acceptable. This online tool may be of help in generating a single high-resolution image: http://screenshot.wutils.com

MAILING ENTRIES: In cases where submitting an article in digital form is not possible, entrants have the option to mail entries. Print articles must be submitted in original tear-sheet form, with no folds other than the normal press fold. A tear sheet of each entry is required, with an entry form attached to each.*

*Texas Truck Invitational entries require TWO tear sheets for each entry, with an entry form attached to each.

The entry must show the author’s byline, publication date and name of publication. In cases where a story jumps to one or more pages, the article must be taped or pasted to heavier paper or cardboard backing to make the entry easier for judges to handle. Page numbers must be included on a multiple-page entry so it can be read in proper sequence.

Entries must be mailed in an appropriate-size envelope, which is large enough to accommodate tear sheets without additional folding or wrinkling. Insert a piece of cardboard in the envelope to decrease the likelihood of bending.

The printed piece must show the photo credit line, publication date and publication name. A screenshot of the page is acceptable in place of a URL address.

    Mailed entries:

If submitting an entry in digital form is not possible, it can be mailed. TWO copies of the photo must be sent in original form, and all work done to the photo must be by the entrant. One length of the photo must measure 10 inches. The photo must be placed in an individual envelope.
